Shahrokh Khanizadeh obtained his B.Sc. in agricultural engineering from Tehran University in Iran and his M.Sc. in small fruit culture from McGill University (Montreal). He graduated with a Ph.D. in plant physiology and biochemistry in 1989 from McGill and continued his postdoctoral research in the area of genetics and fruit breeding. He was Assistant Professor at McGill University from 1992 to 1995 and then joined the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Horticultural Research and Development Centre in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu (Quebec), as a plant breeder, physiologist and statistician. He is presently responsible for developing cold hardy disease resistant fruit varieties through the use of conventional and newer techniques in plant breeding. He is also involved in several other projects such as the cultivation of Ginseng under natural tree canopy, the evaluation of hardy grape cultivars for wine production, and the evaluation of strawberry and apple selections for processing (wine and beer). He has maintained his affiliation with McGill University's Department of Plant Science as an Adjunct Professor.
Shahrokh is a member of Sustainable Production Systems involves in cultivar development/genetic enhancement.
Since 2003, he developed a wide variety of product from unique strawberries, apple and raspberry cultivars to software, databases, books and new method to accelerate the breeding program using CF and bioactive compound as markers. His new cultivars also passed the Canadian border and got popular in Northern Europe where they were granted for European plant breeder’s Rights. Shahrokh released a unique apple that never turns brown or fall from the tree after maturity being frozen in the field (in January) answering to an apple-slice and Ice-cider industry’s important demand, eliminating the need for chemical to keep the whiteness and a new raspberry with 2 fold richer in ellagic acid. Shahrokh released 17 winter hardy dwarf rootstocks, a new scab resistant apple ‘SuperMac’ for fresh market and ‘Diva’ specifically for cider and ice cider production. He created attractive and effective web sites for scientific societies, and promoting AAFC and (since 2003) published over 54 refereed papers, 6 chapters, 8 feature/ J. cover story articles, 40 presentations at national and international meetings, 24 articles in national/international newspaper/periodicals and 20 fully or partially paid invited speaker and lecturer. He was invited by Chinese National Foreign Expert Bureau to lecture on his methods and technology used in fruit breeding. He added a new book entitled “Our Strawberries” to his Fruit series books (Our Apples, Our Plums), which are used internationally as a reference. He is well respected and known locally, nationally and internationally and made a major contribution in training of 15 graduate students and supervised 10 visiting and scholar fellows and received a high level of industry support. As an Assistant/Adjunct Professor at Laval and McGill universities, he collaborates effectively with scientists nationally and internationally and his leadership is appreciated by management and his colleagues for his high value of excellence and collaboration and his availability and open mind to new challenges. He was the president of Canadian Society for Horticultural Science (CSHS) and presently is the president of Plant Canada. Shahrokh received the 1st Gold Harvest Awards from the Deputy Minister of agriculture for recognition of exceptional commitment to the qualities of excellence and innovation, partnering and team building, leadership, client-Centre work, and inclusiveness, particularly with regard to genetic enhancement and cultivar development, collaboration with universities and non-governmental organizations and the important work that foster inclusiveness and equity.
