CALIFORNIA BLUE

Origin: introduced in 1914 in Vacaville, California. Open-pollinated seedling of Peach plum. P. domestica. European type
plum. Fruit: attractive, large to very large in general but variable in La Pocatiere, round; skin: dark blue, heavy bloom, turns
blue early; flesh: soluble solids are 13.8% at maturity; stone: free; flavor: slightly tart, not very pleasant in La Pocatiere;
quality: not good for storage; ripening season: very early, mid-August in Vineland, August 22 to September 1 (average is
August 27) in La Pocatiere. Tree: hardy in Granby (which is about 50 km north of Frelighsburg), but not very hardy in La
Pocatiere (3 of 6 trees were killed within 14 years of planting), starts bearing at 5 years; yield: average in La Pocatiere from 9
year old trees was 16.8 kg/tree on clay soil and 23.2 kg/tree on sandy loam; flowering: in La Pocatiere, starts May 24 (range
May 22-25) and lasts 11-15 days, full bloom is May 28-30. Other: self-fruitful, early dropping of fruit is a problem.

Origine : cultivar introduit en 1914 à Vacaville (Californie). Semis résultant de la pollinisation libre d’un prunier Peach. P.
domestica. Prunier de type européen. Fruit : attrayant, gros à très gros en général mais de grosseur variable à La Pocatière,
sphérique; peau : bleu foncé, très pruinée, acquérant tôt sa couleur bleue; chair : renfermant à maturité 13,8 % de solides
solubles; noyau : libre; saveur : légèrement aigrelette, pas très agréable à La Pocatière; qualité : mauvaise pour l’entreposage;
époque de maturité : très hâtive, mi-août à Vineland, du 22 août au 1er septembre (le 27 août en moyenne) à La Pocatière.

Prunier : rustique à Granby (environ 50 km
au nord de Frelighsburg), mais pas très
rustique à La Pocatière (3 des 6 arbres sont
morts durant les 14 années suivant leur
plantation), produisant à partir de 5 ans;
rendement : à La Pocatière 16,8 kg/arbre
sur sol argileux et 23,2 kg/arbre sur loam
sableux en moyenne pour les arbres de 9
ans; floraison : à La Pocatière débute le 24
mai (22-25 mai) et dure 11 à 15 jours avec
floraison maximale entre le 28 et le 30 mai.
Autres caractéristiques : autocompatible,
problème de chute précoce des fruits.
