Blue Magnum Bonum
Origin: Mr. Hagaman, Lansingburgh, New York, about 1830. P. domestica. European type
plum. Fruit: medium-large, weighing 43.5 g on average, round-oblong, halves equal;
cavity: shallow and somewhat narrow; apex: somewhat pointed; suture: can be hard to see
or be very slightly depressed; stem: 15-20 mm long, medium width, pubescent, adheres
well to fruit; skin: bitter, thin, separates easily from flesh, dark blue, thick bloom,
numerous, inconspicuous dots; flesh: greenish-yellow, not very juicy, a bit soft; stone:
medium size, usually cling but it can be free under some growing conditions; flavor:
fair, sweet, mild, a bit bitter near the stone; quality: poor for dessert and for eating fresh,
very good for shipping; ripening season: September 24 in La Pocatiere. Tree: hardy in
La Pocatiere (rating 9 of 10) where it was observed for 24 years, very hardy in
Frelighsburg, fairly tall, vigorous, upright and a bit spreading, biennial bearer, starts
bearing at 6-8 years; yield: best trees in La Pocatiere produced from 44 to 69 kg but the
average over 12 years was 21 kg/tree; flowering: June 2 to 7 in La Pocatiere. Other: very little
shot-hole leaf spot observed in La Pocatiere, very susceptible to brown rot.

Prunier de type européen. Fruit : moyen à gros, pesant en moyenne 43,5 g,
sphérique-oblong, symétrique; cavité pédonculaire : peu profonde et plutôt
étroite; sommet : plutôt pointu; suture : parfois difficile à distinguer ou très
légèrement en creux; pédoncule : long de 15 à 20 mm, d’épaisseur moyenne,
pubescent, bien fixé au fruit; peau : amère, mince, se séparant facilement de la
chair, bleu foncé, à pruine épaisse, avec des points nombreux mais peu
marqués; chair : jaune verdâtre, pas très juteuse, un peu molle; noyau : de
grosseur moyenne, généralement adhérent mais parfois libre dans certaines
conditions de culture; saveur : passable, sucrée, douce, un peu amère près du
noyau; qualité : médiocre pour les desserts et pour la consommation en frais,
très bonne pour l’expédition; époque de maturité : 24 septembre à La
Pocatière. Prunier : rustique à La Pocatière (cote de 9 sur 10) après 24 ans
d’observation, très rustique à Frelighsburg, assez haut, vigoureux, dressé et un
peu étalé, produisant une année sur deux, produisant à partir de 6 à 8 ans;
rendement : 44 à 69 kg chez les meilleurs pruniers à La Pocatière mais
moyenne de 21 kg/arbre sur 12 ans; floraison : du 2 au 7 juin à La Pocatière.
Autres caractéristiques : très peu de criblure à La Pocatière, très sensible à la
pourriture brune.
