Crescent, Golden La Crescent, Golden Minnesota

Origin: introduced in 1923 by the University of Minnesota Fruit Breeding Farm,
Excelsior, Minnesota. Shiro (P. simonii x P. salicina x P. cerasifera x P.
munsoniana) x Howard Yellow (P. americana). Hybrid type plum. Fruit: attractive,
small to medium size, weighing 20.4 g on average in Frelighsburg from unthinned
trees, irregular and round-oblong; cavity: shallow, narrow, smooth; apex: rounded;
suture: not visible; stem: 10 mm long, slender, has a tendency to drop at maturity;
skin: thin to medium thick, easy to remove from flesh, yellow darkening to orangy-
yellow with red blush, dots are not visible; flesh: yellow, juicy, very tender, melting,
not fibrous, soluble solids are 15.2 % at maturity; stone: free, small; flavor: sweet,
aromatic, good; quality: good for eating fresh, dessert and jam; ripening season: end of
August in Frelighsburg, early to mid-September (average September 11) in La Pocatiere. Tree:
hardy on the island of Montreal, fairly hardy in Frelighsburg (there is evidence of winter kill in some years), not fully hardy
in La Pocatiere, vigorous, large, upright-spreading, pretty tree, started bearing 4 years after planting in La Pocatiere; yield:
moderately productive, produces a lot of flowers but few fruits are produced, average yield of 9 year old trees was 22 kg/tree
on clay soil and 12 kg/tree on sandy loam in La Pocatiere; flowering:
in La Pocatiere, starts May 19 (range May 15-23) and lasts 10-16
days, full bloom is May 25 (range May 22-28). Other: good
pollinizer, very susceptible to shot-hole leaf spot disease (it is one of
the worst in this regard), easy to propagate.

Fruit : attrayant, petit à moyen, pesant
20,4 g en moyenne à Frelighsburg lorsqu’il
n’y a aucun éclaircissage, irrégulier et sphérique-oblong; cavité pédonculaire : peu profonde, étroite, lisse; sommet : arrondi;
suture : non visible; pédoncule : long de 10 mm, mince, ayant tendance à se détacher à maturité; peau : mince à moyenne,

facile à détacher de la chair, jaune passant au jaune orangé avec lavis rouge, à
points non visibles; chair : jaune, juteuse, très tendre, fondante, non fibreuse,
renfermant 15,2 % de solides solubles à maturité; noyau : libre, petit; saveur :
sucrée, aromatique, bonne; qualité : bonne pour la consommation en frais, les
desserts et la confiture; époque de maturité : fin août à
Frelighsburg, entre le début et la mi-septembre
(11 septembre en moyenne) à La Pocatière.
Prunier : rustique dans l’île de Montréal,
assez rustique à Frelighsburg (signes de
dessiccation hivernale certaines
années), non complètement rustique à
La Pocatière, vigoureux, grand, dressé-
étalé, de belle apparence, commençant à
produire 4 ans après la plantation à La
Pocatière; rendement : modérément élevé,
produisant beaucoup de fleurs mais peu de fruits,
en moyenne 22 kg/arbre sur sol argileux et 12 kg/arbre sur loam sableux pour les
arbres de 9 ans à La Pocatière; floraison : à La Pocatière débute le 19 mai (15-23
mai) et dure 10 à 16 jours avec floraison maximale le 25
mai (22-28 mai). Autres caractéristiques : bon
pollinisateur, très sensible à la criblure (une des pires
variétés à cet égard), facile à multiplier.
