Fiebing Prize, Phoebe
Origin: introduced around 1929 by Charles Haralson, Deephaven, Minnesota. Wickson (P. salicina) x Kaga (P. americana x
P. simonii). Hybrid type plum. Fruit: large, roundish, a bit irregular; suture: prominent; skin: thick, bright dark red; flesh:
yellow, juicy, firm, fine texture; stone: cling; flavor: sweet, aromatic; quality: very good; ripening season: August 21 in
Ottawa and Montreal, August 30 in La Pocatiere. Tree: hardy in La Pocatiere with a rating of 9.2 on 10 after 18 years of
observations, very vigorous, annual bearer, spreading, precocious, starts bearing at 3-6 years depending on the rootstock
used; yield: productive, average was 22-25 kg/tree in Ottawa with the best trees producing up to 65 kg; flowering: mid-
season, May 12 to 22 in Ottawa, full bloom is May 25 in La Pocatiere. Other: fruit is susceptible to brown rot, the flowers are
hard to pollinate.

americana x P. simonii). Prunier de type hybride. Fruit : gros, plutôt sphérique, un peu irrégulier; suture : bien marquée; peau
: épaisse, rouge vif foncé; chair : jaune, juteuse, ferme, à texture fine; noyau : adhérent; saveur : sucrée, aromatique; qualité :
très bonne; époque de maturité : le 21 août à Ottawa et Montréal, le 30 août à La Pocatière. Prunier : rustique à La Pocatière
avec cote de 9,2 sur 10 après 18 ans d’observation, très vigoureux, produisant chaque année, étalé, précoce, produisant à
partir de 3 à 6 ans selon le porte-greffe employé; rendement : élevé, 22 à 25 kg/arbre en moyenne à Ottawa, les meilleurs
arbres produisant jusqu’à 65 kg; floraison : mi-saison, du 12 au 22 mai à Ottawa, floraison
maximale le 25 mai à La Pocatière. Autres caractéristiques : fruit sensible à la pourriture brune,
fleurs difficiles à polliniser.

GERMAN PRUNE

Origin: a very old variety of P. domestica. European type plum. Fruit: small, 41 x 25 mm, long oval, unequal sides; cavity:
very shallow, narrow; apex: somewhat pointed; suture: a faint line; stem: fairly slender, medium long, adheres well to fruit;
skin: tough, separates easily from flesh, purplish-black, thick bloom, a few scattered dots; flesh: yellowish-green, medium
juicy, firm; stone: free, small; flavor: a bit sweet, mild; quality: good for drying and canning, fair for dessert; ripening season:
late, end of September in La Pocatiere. Tree: hardy in La Pocatiere, medium to large, vigorous, round and dense-topped,
annual bearer, starts bearing at 5 years; yield: adult trees yielded 39 to 47 kg in La Pocatiere; flowering: May 17 in La
Pocatiere. Other: prune type plum, since the fruit almost comes true to seed, it has been propagated by planting pits, which
explains why there are many strains of German Prune.

Origine : très ancienne variété de P. domestica. Prunier de type européen. Fruit : petit, 41 x 25 mm, ovale-allongé, à côtés
inégaux; cavité pédonculaire : très peu profonde, étroite; sommet : plutôt en saillie; suture : limitée à une ligne peu marquée;
pédoncule : assez mince, de longueur moyenne, bien fixé au fruit; peau : coriace, se séparant facilement de la chair, noir
violacé, à pruine épaisse, avec quelques points éparpillés; chair : vert jaunâtre, moyennement juteuse, ferme; noyau : libre,
petit; saveur : un peu sucrée, douce; qualité : bonne pour le séchage et la mise en conserve, passable pour les desserts; époque
de maturité : tardive, fin septembre à La Pocatière. Prunier : rustique à La Pocatière, moyen à grand, vigoureux, rond, à
houppier dense, produisant chaque année, produisant à partir de 5 ans; rendement : 39 à 47 kg par arbre adulte à La Pocatière;
floraison : le 17 mai à La Pocatière. Autres caractéristiques : prunier à pruneaux, comme la variété se reproduit presque
fidèlement par la semence on l’a multipliée en plantant des noyaux ce qui explique les nombreuses souches connues.
