Origin: introduced in 1911 by the South Dakota Experimental Station. P. americana x
P. simonii. American type plum. Fruit: medium to large, weighing 38.9 g, roundish to
heart-shaped; cavity: medium depth and width; apex: rounded; suture: very shallow,
indistinct line; stem: thick, 14-17 mm long; skin: thick, tough, fairly dark red over
yellow background, thin bloom, dots very small, indistinct; flesh: yellow, juicy,
moderately firm, soluble solids are 20.0 % at maturity; stone: medium size, oval, cling;
flavor: sweet flesh but acid near skin, pleasant but a bit unusual; quality: good; ripening
season: mid-September in Ottawa, September 25 in La Pocatiere. Tree: not hardy in La
Pocatiere, hardy in Frelighsburg with a 3 on 3 rating for survival during the harsh winter of 1989-
90, very vigorous, with too many branches, upright, resembles a Lombardi poplar, starts bearing at
4 years; yield: said to be a heavy bearer but not in La Pocatiere, it was rated as ‘sometimes
productive’ in Morden; flowering: very long, starts May 19 (range May 16-23) and lasts 21-24
days, full bloom is May 25 (range May 23-27) in La Pocatiere. Other: excellent pollinizer of
hybrid plums, self-fruitful, not susceptible to shot-hole leaf spot disease.

type américain. Fruit : moyen à gros, pesant 38,9 g, plutôt
sphérique à cordiforme; cavité pédonculaire : de profondeur et
largeur moyennes; sommet : arrondi; suture : très peu profonde,
limitée à une ligne peu marquée; pédoncule : épais, long de 14
à 17 mm; peau : épaisse, coriace, rouge assez foncé sur fond
jaune, à pruine mince, avec points très petits et peu marqués;
chair : jaune, juteuse, modérément ferme, renfermant 20,0 % de
solides solubles à maturité; noyau : de grosseur moyenne,
ovale, adhérent; saveur : sucrée dans la chair mais acide près de

la peau, agréable mais un peu
inhabituelle; qualité : bonne; époque de maturité : mi-
septembre à Ottawa, le 25 septembre à La Pocatière.
Prunier : non rustique à La Pocatière, rustique à
Frelighsburg (taux de survie de 3 sur 3 après le dur
hiver de 1989-1990), très vigoureux, trop ramifié,
dressé, ressemblant à un peuplier de Lombardie,
produisant à partir de 4 ans; rendement : élevé selon
certains, faible à La Pocatière, jugé « parfois élevé » à
Morden; floraison : très longue, à La Pocatière débute le
19 mai (16-23 mai) et dure 21 à 24 jours avec floraison
maximale le 25 mai (23-27 mai). Autres caractéristiques : excellent pollinisateur pour les
pruniers hybrides, autocompatible, non sensible à la criblure.
